ROUGE TUNNEL PROJECT UPDATE
The Upper Rouge Tunnel Project has been put on hold. Preliminary work has been completed, but the contractor has not been authorized to proceed with additional work.
The driving force behind this decision appears to be cost, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department now believes there are other solutions or design changes that will result in significant cost savings. DWSD is currently negotiating with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for an extension of time so they can more thoroughly research other options. There is a federal mandate that DWSD must come up with some sort of solution to eliminate or almost completely eliminate combined sewer overflows so it is highly likely that there will be some sort of project occurring.
For the immediate future the fence and office complex will stay.
